At Musoni we’re always looking for ways that technology can improve the efficiency of microfinance operations. One great approach is to use SMS messages to improve communication with clients and reduce the workload of loan officers. Indeed, we see utilising SMS reminders as a key step along the technology journey MFIs go through (see image below).
Our use of SMS messages started almost three years ago. In 2011, we launched an SMS module for Musoni Kenya, enabling automatic and personalised payment reminders to be sent directly to clients, if for example the client missed an instalment, or if Musoni Kenya wanted to congratulate a client on completing a loan. Since then, we have processed over 800,000 SMS messages, and still process over 500 messages a day. A study carried out in 2012 concluded that the SMS campaigns developed by Musoni Services were a significant factor in Musoni Kenya’s excellent portfolio quality.
It’s great to say therefore that we’ve now added this feature as standard to the Musoni System, making it possible for all Musoni partners to send payment reminders, marketing campaigns, and congratulatory messages directly to their clients.
To set up a SMS campaign in the Musoni System, you just have to click on SMS module link, as shown below:
You are then taken to the SMS Module, where you can see an overview of all of the SMS Campaigns that have been set up, as well as create new campaigns by clicking on ‘Create Campaign’, shown in red below.
When you click ‘Create Campaign’ you are taken to the create campaign workflow, where you can enter the Campaign Name; type (one-off or reoccurring); the date you wish the messages to be sent; the frequency of recurring campaigns (daily, weekly etc); the business rule itself (such as all clients who received a loan in the last 7 days); and any parameters linked to the business rule.
You are then asked to enter the actual message contents, where you can also link the contents directly to data in the system (enabling you to personalise messages).
Once a campaign has been saved, it needs to be approved before the messages are sent out. Easy as that! We hope you appreciate this feature as much as we do – please just get in touch if you’d like a personalised demo.
